Hail, Mary! is the third episode in the second season of Chucky.
Synopsis[]
Jake proposes brainwashing the captured Chucky and turning him into an ally.
Plot[]
Father Bryce interrogates Jake and considers punishing him for lying about the whereabouts of the Chucky doll. He impresses on Jake the necessity of confession to have a clean soul and dismisses him to lunch. Jake heads to his dormitory, where Devon, Lexy, and Nadine are waiting. Jake asks Lexy if she found anything searching through Chucky's phone. She did, a name known only as "The Colonel". They try to torture the doll for information, but Chucky only laughs. Shortly thereafter, in a classroom, Sister Catherine delivers a lecture on the depiction of Christ in Western art, specifically Salvador Dali's Christ of Saint John of the Cross. The class ends, and she stops Jake as he leaves. She asks about Devon's health, as Devon has been feigning sickness to keep watch over Chucky. Jake is terse in his responses, especially when she presses the subject of his guilt regarding the death of his foster brother, Gary. They discuss the idea of forgiveness, and Jake leaves.
At a spigot, Lexy takes some Clonazepam, but is stopped by Trevor. The two trade snide comments and Trevor reminds Lexy that students are forbidden to keep their own medication. Lexy tries to leave, but Trevor threatens Lexy and informs her of her mother's defeat in the election for Hackensack mayor. Back in the dormitory, Chucky struggles against his bonds. Chucky taunts Devon and Jake enters the room. Meanwhile, Nadine tires to offer a near hour-long confession to Father O'Malley, but he says the confessional is closed. He hurries off, telling Nadine to "pray on her sins" instead of returning to confessional the following day. When Nadine insists, Father O'Malley relents, and agrees to see Nadine the next day. In the dormitory, Jake and Devon discuss what to do with the doll. Jake resolves to brainwash the Scout Chucky and hopefully turn him into an ally.
Having gotten all the supplies, Lexy and Nadine join Jake and Devon in their attempt to brainwash Chucky. Lexy, in want of sympathy, tries to share her bad day, Jake is too focused and rebuffs her. They stretch Chucky's eyelids à la "Ludovico Technique" and play clips of the ultraviolence, including scenes from John Carpenter's The Thing. Chucky, repulsed by the images, vomits and begs for it to stop. The trio and Nadine continue on, and Chucky babbles, quoting Andy Barclay's pleas to Maggie Peterson 29 years prior. After The Thing, they switch to Happy Unicorns. The torture proceeds into the night, with everyone eventually falling asleep. Jake wakens, and removes the clamps holding Chucky's eyes open. The torture appears to have worked: Scout Chucky is much more docile and demure.
The doll appears to have no memory of his mission or why he's at the school. Devon thinks its a plot, and when Chucky leaps from his chair toward Lexy, Devon grabs a knife, but Chucky was only tying Lexy's shoes. Jake asks who untied Chucky, and Chucky responds that his bonds came loose on their own. Devon continues to be suspicious, and leaves the room in a huff when no one else shares his view. Lexy also leaves, and Jake heads off after Devon, leaving Nadine to watch the doll. Jake and Devon argue over what to do as Father Bryce eavesdrops. Meanwhile, Lexy heads into the infirmary, to hide her pills in their "proper" place and save herself a drug possession charge. She is caught by Sister Ruth. Lexy asks her for an aspirin, but is unable to sneak the pill bottle into the medicine cabinet when the nun unlocks it. Outside, Lexy is accosted by Trevor, who tells her that if she refuses to kiss his ass and do what he says, he'll make Incarnate Lord a living hell for her. She responds that she knows what it's like to be a bully, apologizes for having sent him here, but refuses to bow to his whims. When a nun walks out into the hall, Lexy loudly exclaims that Trevor wants condoms, prompting the nun to storm over. She assures Trevor that she's not afraid: her situation couldn't possibly be worse, and leaves. Outside, another driver arrives with a wrapped package shaped like a Good Guy box.
Father Bryce sits against the wall in the third-floor corridor. As Devon ascends the stairs on the far end of the hall, Father Bryce calls out to him and approaches, asking why he's out of bed if he's sick. Devon blames food poisoning. Father Bryce suggests that his sick feeling may be guilt. He escorts Devon to the chapel and orders him to correct his uniform. Inside the dorm, Nadine talks Chucky's ear off. Jake and Lexy enter. They try to decide who gets the next shift of watching Chucky, and Lexy acquiesces to the task. Nadine and Jake leave, and Jake finds Devon scrubbing the floors and pews as penance until Chucky is returned. He admonishes Jake, telling him that so long as the doll is in his possession, the three of them will be under scrutiny and subject to various punishments. Back in the dorm, Chucky pesters Lexy with questions, oblivious to her annoyance. When Chucky asks if Lexy had a boyfriend, Lexy is rattled. She reveals his name was Junior and that he was kind. Chucky begins to say the name in a sing-song voice, giving Lexy a panic attack. She hurriedly leaves the room. In confessional, Nadine reveals to Father O'Malley that Lexy is taking drugs, though gushes about her personality and looks and laments Trevor's existence. Though Father O'Malley tries to interrupt to speed the process along, Nadine talks over him and spills the beans about Chucky being alive and how that contradicts the doctrine of Catholicism. Father O'Malley, barely paying attention, takes a swig from his whiskey flask. Just then, Chucky appears from behind and strangles the priest with a rosary. Nadine, caught up in her story, does not hear the homicide taking place right next to her. The rosary snaps and the beads scatter to the floor. When she finishes her confession, she calls out to the Father, but Buff Chucky responds. Satisfied, Nadine leaves the confessional booth and sees the beads all over the floor. She gathers most of them into her pockets and leaves. Buff Chucky follows shortly thereafter.
While Lexy has a panic attack in the bathroom, and Devon scrubs the floors, Nadine begins saying the four hundred "Hail Marys" that Chucky assigned as penance while she heads upstairs. She enters the dorm and finds Scout Chucky gone. Terror washes over her as she sprints out. A bell tolls as Father Bryce and Sister Catherine have a polite argument over Father Bryce's methods. Jake enters the room and snaps at Father Bryce. Upstairs, Nadine enters the restroom and comforts Lexy as she breaks down, frustrated with her lot in life as the "cool, chill, funny" one when the weight of all the murders, her vapid politician mother, and Trevor all bearing down on her. Father Bryce enters his office and finds the Chucky doll on his desk, so he dismisses Devon from manual labor. Upstairs, Trevor sneaks into Lexy and Nadine's room. He plants drugs in Lexy's nightstand, but as he turns to leave, he encounters Buff Chucky. The doll leaps forward, delivering a hook to the jaw. Trevor scrambles backward, begging for his life as Buff Chucky punches through Trevor's sternum and out his back, tearing open the kid's chest and clutching his still-beating heart. Trevor falls to the ground dead.
A terrified Lexy and Nadine discover Trevor's body, followed by Jake and Devon. The group is in shambles as Lexy admits to leaving Chucky alone, potentially with the door unlocked. Not knowing about the other Chucky, they incorrectly deduce that Brainwashed Chucky killed Trevor and then snuck down to Father Bryce's office to mess with them. Just then, a Sister Ruth calls out "inspection". They quickly hide Trevor's body, shove Jake and Devon in the closet, and cover the bloodstain with a blanket. Lexy discovers the drugs Trevor planted in her dresser and puts them in her pocket. The two get their stuffed animals and sit on the blanket hiding the blood. When Sister Ruth inquires about Lexy's feigned headache, Lexy responds "all better". Sister Ruth continues the inspection, as Nadine attempts to distract her and successfully annoys her to the point of leaving. When the coast is clear, Jake and Devon leave. In Father Bryce's office, Scout Chucky sings to himself. Just then, Buff Chucky enters the room and menacingly approaches Scout Chucky, cracking his knuckles as Scout Chucky's eyes go wide.
